Indoor skating rinks almost always use cold concrete to make the ice. When the rink is built, miles of metal pipes are laid inside a concrete slab. The entire slab of concrete that makes up the arena floor drops below freezing. Then, thin layers of water are poured on the concrete and allowed to freeze.

What is underneath an ice rink?
Insulation & Heated Concrete Underneath there is a layer of insulation and a heated concrete layer. This keeps the ground below the ice from freezing, which could expand and ultimately crack the rink structure.
How deep is the ice in an ice rink?
Ice is approximately 3/4″ of an inch thick and is usually chilled at 16 degrees fahrenheit. The thicker the ice, the softer and slower it becomes.
How do they freeze an ice rink?
At the beginning of the hockey season, the arena uses an advanced refrigeration system that pumps freezing “brinewater” (salt water) through a system of pipes that run through a large piece of concrete known as the “ice slab.” When the “ice slab” gets cold enough, layers of water are applied to it.
How long does it take to make the ice for the rink?
The entire process can take almost 48 hours. The ice is only about one inch thick when everything is finished. In addition, the official size of a National Hockey League rink is 200 feet long and 85 feet wide.
How thick should ice rink be?
Q4 – How thick does the ice have to be? A – A minimum of 2” (two inches) thick for the ice to stay solid and hold the weight of a 300lb person is required. For the municipal rinks, we recommend at least 3” (three inches).
How much does it cost to keep an ice rink frozen?
Quite allot, nearly 40000 dollars a month to keep the local one going. They have several dehumidifiers, plus about 70 pipes under the ice, all of which is refrigerating.
How many face off dots are there on a hockey rink?
A hockey rink has a total of nine face-off spots. These areas are simply called “dots” or “face-off spots.” Four face-offs spots, those in the end zones, have hashmarks on the circles to indicate where players should stand.
What temp is an ice rink?
Typically the ambient air temperature is between 50-60°F (10-15°C) while the ice temperature is around 24°F (-4,4 °C). Hockey games are colder the closer you are to the ice and usually colder if it’s cold outside and if there is no heating, or if there are fewer people in the rink (emitting body heat).
What temperature is hockey ice?
Bruce Tharaldson keeps the temperature of the ice at sixteen degrees Fahrenheit (-9 centigrade) for hockey and twenty-two degrees (-5.5 centigrade) for figure skating. Apparently, the figure skaters prefer softer ice for their landings and the six-degree temperature difference provides that.
Does a Zamboni use hot water?
The machine dispenses warm water (140 to 145 degrees F or 60 to 63 degrees C) through holes at the back, where a towel smoothes it as it freezes along the surface [sources: Exploratorium, Zamboni].
How do they paint NHL ice?
White powdered paint is mixed with water in a large tank creating a liquid paint mix. This paint is then applied to the ice surface with a large 12-foot spray boom and a pump. Two to three coats are applied to cover the surface. This is then sealed in with fine water spray, which freezes.
