Is an EAD the same as a visa?
Work Visa. Both, an Employment Authorization Document (EAD) and a non-immigrant work visa allow the holders to work in the United States, but both documents are not the same. The eligibility requirements for an EAD is different from that of a work visa.
What type of visa is EAD?
An Employment Authorization Document (EAD) is an identification card that U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) issues to certain qualifying foreign nationals to work in the United States. Many people refer to the card as a work permit. At USCIS, the Employment Authorization Document is known as Form I-766.
What does the EAD card allow you to do?
An EAD gives a person legal status to work in the United States but has fewer privileges than a green card. It shows an expiration date (usually one year from date issued) and is renewable. Any alien with a valid Employment Authorization Document (Form I-766 or Form I-688B) can be issued a Social Security number.

Can I stay in U.S. with EAD?
An EAD has a temporary lifespan. Most EADs are valid for one year, but it may differ from case to case. It is important to keep in mind that an EAD does not allow someone to stay in the U.S. Visas or Green Cards are used to allow someone entry into the U.S., not an EAD.
Is EAD a green card?
The EAD is also known as a nonimmigrant US work permit, and it permits individuals on a nonimmigrant visa to work legally in the US. Individuals in the process of applying for a green card are also eligible; this is called the green card based EAD, or GC EAD.
How long can you stay on EAD without job?
Practically forever (just half kidding). There is no time limit. With your I-485 having been filed and pending for more than 180 days you are in great shape to “port” to another employer, as long as in the “same” or “similar” “occupation”.
How long does it take to get green card after EAD?
Immigrants who file for a work permit concurrently with their Green Card application typically fall on the longer side of that estimate, with most Green Card applicants receiving their Employment Authorization Document (EAD) in about 150 days.
Do I need EAD card for H1B?
An H1B visa is a work visa so an EAD is not also required. Also, having an EAD and using it, even with a second, nighttime or part-time employer, we believe will void the H1B visa. Some attorneys are willing to gamble on that fact.
Can I use EAD card to fly?
Yes an unexpired EAD is valid for TSA purposes.
Can I work with EAD without SSN?
Yes, you can start working without an SSN if you have an employment authorization document.

What happens after EAD is approved?
If USCIS approves your application, you will receive two documents – your Employment Authorization Document (EAD), also known as the “USCIS I-766 card” or “work permit”, and in another envelope your SSN card. You should receive your SSN card no later than 7 business days after you receive your EAD from USCIS.
Can I start work with EAD approval notice?
No. Even though you’ve received approval for your EAD application, it’s not enough to start working. It doesn’t prove anything to your employer, and it’s better to wait for your actual card before you start working.
